Loss and replacement of Arabisms in Spanish: illnesses and affections of medieval medicine
Abstract
Most of the Spanish words of Arabic origin that designate illnesses in Middle Ages have disappeared, such as adivas or ajuagas, used in veterinary medicine.
However, there are some still in use, such as jaqueca. Others have been replaced by Latinisms (zaratán, replaced by cáncer), or we can mention the derived word buba, that replaces botor. There are also special cases, when the Latinism (migraña) is strongly competed by the Arabism (jaqueca). The aim of this paper is to study neological movements from this specialized field.
