New York in a poet
Abstract
In 1929-1930 Federico García Lorca spent one year in America—nine months in New York and three months in Cuba. The poet’s first trip left an indelible influence on his life. Far from his family in the huge city of New York, the young Andalusian received countless impulses that enriched both his work and his personality. As a result of my research concerning the abundant correspondence of García Lorca and some recentstudies on his stay in the Big Apple, this paper offers a survey of the impressions and experiences (his friends, the English language, the city, the Broadway, Harlem, the African Americans) that the poet obtained in this ‘Senegal with machines’.
